The congregation decided that it was time to build a new sanctuary. The current one is in poor condition and we must make a change. We are excited to share that work began on our new sanctuary in July 2024. This is a significant milestone for Mercy Seat Baptist Church as we embark on a journey to create a new space for worship and community. Construction is divided into a total of four phases. The first two will be completed in early 2025.
Until the new sanctuary is complete, we are still in our current location on Flat Prairie Rd. The new sanctuary is located on FM 912. It is less than two miles from Washington-on-the Brazos State Historic Site.
This project is more than just building a structure; it’s about creating a place where the community can come together to worship, build relationships, and grow in faith. We invite you to join us on this journey and be part of something special.
The state of our current facility is disrepair. Over time, various storms from the May 2016 flood to Hurricane Harvey, to May 2023 flooding have harmed our church. We always counted our blessings that the storms did not destroy it. One storm after the other gradually took its toll on the buildings.
The Church - The church is still in use, but the floor is not stable. The foyer area and restrooms are not level. Though it may be hard to see in the photos, the floor is sinking and that has made the sink start to lean and separate from the wall. In the sanctuary, the outside aisles are no longer used due to the weak floor structure. The walls also have damage. It is apparent that water got into the church and weakened the structure.
The Fellowship Hall - The fellowship hall has not been used in almost nine years. Floodwaters washed under the fellowship hall on more than one occasion. As can be seen in the pictures, the brick is separating from the building, and windows are busted out. We no longer use the building due to its unsafe state.
Construction is well underway. Below are a few photos documenting the progress of our new sanctuary. We will update this section regularly so you can witness the transformation from the groundbreaking to the completion of the building.
